"Stop walking."
The rattle was loud in the sweet silence of the forest. David stopped at Jack’s command, mid-step. His eyes searched rapidly from side to side on the trail for the rattlesnake.
There he was.
The snake was curled up tight on the side of the trail, head raised up about six inches, tongue flicking to taste for them, harshly slit eyes darting around, tail raised and rattling faster than a hummingbird’s wings.
"What do I do?" David hissed.
"I don’t…"
"Put your foot down very, very slowly." The gruff voice came from behind a tree to their left. They looked over at a bona fide mountain man. Huge barrel chest, bucket hat with fishing flies stuck through it, old-school camo fatigues, backpack the size of a small child, ragged black beard spiking out which was threaded into a beaded Viking braid, grey showing through the strands.
...
