Mother's day
Today is a very special day. The day we get to honor the women who raised us. Mother's day. A day they really do deserve. Every one of us would be lost without the woman who took care of us. It's not a male vs female thing either. Mother's are much more than a gender. They are the ones who carried us, nurtured us, and sacrificed so much for us. In a day and age where we fight to protect life from those who would snuff it out, mothers are flat out heroes!
My mother, Dawn Cook, is one of these special people. Not only did she give birth, but she loved and nurtured her children. The mark of a mother is her love. Our family life was not all roses and sunshine. When others left, she took care of us. This dedication to family, even at great cost to herself helped my brother and I grow into the men we are today. The voice in my life that said “though others may leave you, no matter what comes our way I will not leave you.” She is fearless, and courageous.
My mother instilled these family values in me. To honor my mother; her children and their spouses decided to do something special for her. We wrote a book, born from her dedication. This book features two siblings on a hike through the Pacific Crest trail. In order to make it the 5 month hike through the wild, these two boys must band together. It's not always an easy journey. Just like life, there are dangerous obstacles along the way. Can they make it the 2,650 miles from the Mexico border to Canada? If the stick together they have a chance. My mother is a very special person to me. In a time where I struggled so much, and felt alone, she was always there. In many ways I owe my growth to her. God has blessed me by picking her to be my mother. The title of this book “We Go” is short but it stands for 2 things she taught me. First, the “we” in “we go” speaks to her dedication to stand by her family. She never once left me in the lurch, she was always there to protect and support us. Second, “go” in “we go” talks of her fearlessness. She did not run away from the storms of life, she marched us through them. We survived the storms, living life to its fullest potential. When so many in life would leave when things got tough, my mother’s strength was at its apex. “We go” says we will do this life thing, and we will do it together. It is her hand holding mine. It is one of the most beautiful things I have ever experienced, my mother’s love.
To Dawn Cook, you are a hero to Josh and I. In many ways you saved us, you protected us, you never ever left us, and it left a mark. You deserve much more than this, but we hope this dedication makes your day a little more special. From the bottom of our hearts, we are forever thankful, happy Mother’s day mom!
