Story-telling

Today is Friday, again.

Today is Friday, again.

Discussion

This story open is less obvious, but its use of the word “again” elevates the otherwise mundane statement “today is Friday.” This has a wide range of implications from the fantastical to the more everyday stories. This could work for any day of the week, but I chose Friday because Friday is typically considered a happy day, as it is the end of the workweek. The comma adds distance between the words “Friday” and “again” and is therefore read with a negative connotation. This could actually be emphasized by replacing the comma with a period, increasing the pause between the two words and thus strengthening the negative connotation.

Uses

This open could be used in a variety of ways. It could be used to introduce:

  • a time-traveling character reliving the same day over and over.

  • a time-traveling character reliving the same week over and over.

  • a character stuck in a routine. For example, Friday is always payday and certain events tend to unfold on Fridays when people around them have extra cash to burn.
