The end of the world came during the peak of her career.
We first meet Rebecca in our opening. She is the opening character, standing on a cliff surveying the town below for potential threats or resources. She is capable and fit, but she was not always used to living with so little. Rebecca grew up wealthy and educated. With an education from Oberlin College in Ohio, she later moved to this rural town after marrying.
Her husband has been MIA ever since the grid went down, and now she has been in charge of providing for her 2 children. Without any useful skills to afford her to stay in the safety of sanctuary, she must leave her children behind to scout. Everyone must pull pitch in order to stay at the sanctuary. Serving the community as a scout, she is able to secure shelter for her family.
Her husband was a prepper and an amateur radio operator. Using the gear he left behind and skills she learned from watching him, she was able to scout successfully for years without incident. Often she thinks about him, and how he would love doing what she is being forced to do. She does this out of necessity. Her instinct is to stay out of the fight, to hide or run. However, given no other choice, she plays prepper channeling her husband to survive.

Introducing Jude, one of our main characters. He is the son of Nathan and Rebecca and brother to Eden.
As I write chapter 2 and try to introduce the next main character Jude, I find his current profession unappealing. Perhaps he needs to go in a different direction.
