We first meet Janine in our opening. She is a side character who interrupts Jim as he is talking with Rebecca over the radio. Janine is assertive and demanding over the radio, demanding that she not waste resources on obtaining more tech. She instructs Rebecca to focus her efforts on finding food and water.
In the early days of the collapse, Janine was able to purchase food and water to overstock her grocery store. She caught a lot of flack from corporate for doing this, but she never had to deal with those consequences as the collapse spelled the end for the corporation. Her store had the ability to store about 2.5 years of food and water for roughly 30 people, but because she overstocked the store with supplies she was able to provide food and water to the community for 3 years.
The first year of the collapse people was still able to get by with food in their pantries, and regularly restocking the pantry every week. It wasn’t until the grid went down that the trucks stopped, and the pantries started to become bare. Her fast thinking and disregard for profits allowed her to use this time to keep her shelves stocked. As the economy went further into collapse and prices were rising, she continued to keep the store overstocked at a huge loss to the bottom line. If the world wasn’t going to end surely her career was over, but her determination provided the much-needed supplies for the community.

As I write chapter 2 and try to introduce the next main character Jude, I find his current profession unappealing. Perhaps he needs to go in a different direction.
